Are you an aspiring leader but struggling to get traction in your career?
I've been working with many leaders and managers in the past few months and a common theme is coming up in our sessions around not having enough time to focus on personal development. I'm talking about stuff like learning how to give feedback, delegate, support your team...you get the picture. Work is tough, and its a go go go culture. When you are under-resourced and work is piling up, with deadlines after deadlines, I get it, we just want the work to be done. As much as you want to truly be there and develop your team, it's hard to manage in the limited time you have.
Trust me, I've been there. After working like a 'mad' woman throughout the year, the feedback I would receive is you need to learn how to better .... [FILL IN THE BLANKS] and my question would be...WHEN?!
However, fear not! After finding a mechanism that helped me to thrive, and the same one that I am using with my clients, I will share with you which I am super excited about!
There are many elements to creating time and space so you can continue to grow as a leader. One of them is delegation. In this edition, I will give you quick tips on delegation so you can start thinking and implementing some of them right away:
🔮 Shift your mindset from icky to empowerment:
You are a manager because your manager knows you can do the job. S/he also wants you to grow. The key to being a great manager is empowering your team to be the best version of themselves. How will you do this? When you trust them to do their best by giving them more ownership over important things. The result? They get exposure, learn, grow. Any hi-po's in your team? They will love you for this!
🔮 Start small:
Start by giving small little things that you know your team can do. Identify their strengths and leverage them. Match the task to the strength in the team. Result? A job well done.
🔮 Let go of the fear:
Many people fear their team will think they are passing things along. They fear that the team will think s/he has become lazy. They definitely don't want anyone to think that! BUT, I challenge you on this thinking. If you are still reading this, I bet you care deeply about your people and doing the job well. Then ask yourself, are you lazy? Are you passing things on and chilling with a cup of hot tea? NO. Your team knows this too.
🔮 Grow them:
Remember a time when you were in their shoes and you wanted to learn and grow more than anything else? Remember, when someone took the time to show you the steps, and then trusted you to execute, you looked up to them and they earned your respect? Your team is you, only now. Empower them to grow.
🔮 Communicate:
Seems like a no-brainer right? Why don't you share your thoughts? Have a 1:1 and tell them you want to grow and empower them by trusting them to take on more. That you will be there, supporting them and teaching them. What do you think they will say?
So, in 5 steps, you shift your mindset towards delegation, create space and time for yourself. Now you can focus on taking on things that will help you to grow continuously as well, focus on areas you want to develop and ensure your team is growing too.
I say WIN WIN! 💃
If you need additional support in shifting your mindset, remove whatever is in your way so you and your team can thrive, and delegate effectively by empowering your team and creating time and space for yourself, I have just the solution for you. In just one powerful session, you can go from icky to yippee! Ready to thrive? Book a session here.
